Dunsborough Foreshore and Seymour Park Concept Design
Key Objectives • To honour the community's input and create a place that encompasses its collective vision. • To let the unique landscape and environment shine through any design. • To create a place that is iconic, robust and without gimmicks. • To connect the town centre visually with the foreshore. • To create a town heart in Seymour Park. • To promote community and visitor interaction by create a place that is welcoming to all. •To celebrate Dunsborough's diverse heritage. Key Design Elements: 1. The Foreshore Walk The view down Dunn Bay Road has been opened creating a pedestrian link and view corridor to the Foreshore. The Foreshore Walk I i n ks the town centre with the beautiful ocean foreshore. Several long, wide sitting benches are positioned under shade trees along this walk. At the edge of the beach, the walkway meets the water with simple, ramped steps that are nestled into the foreshore's subtle contours. 2. Foreshore Garden Between Dunn Bay Road and the new foreshore walk is a garden area. This garden is beautifully planted with local species and is an extension of the wetland system that is found the foreshore. With its subtle contours, it also serves as an overflow storm water management basin. 3. Seymour Park In the centre of the park is a sloping oval, providing a gently inclined grassed area with views to the foreshore and towards the adjacent Meeting Place. 4. The Meeting Place (see detail for description). 5. The Playground Nestled in to the back slope of the grassed oval, is a community playground. For smaller children, a "corralled" play space includes benches for adults and play equipment appropriate for toddlers. The play area for bigger kids includes a series of "bird perches", a spider net, platforms for sitting and climbing and a raised slide and exploration area. 6. Toilet Block Adjacent to the playground is a small toilet block. 7. The Field This is an open field, wooded on its edges, that is suitable to ball play and overflow parking during larger community events. 8. The Seymour Tree A simple, curving bench outlines a small plaza area that honours the spectacular Melaleuca tree. 9. The Foreshore Gathering Place A small circular paving area edged with simple, wide benches creates an open, yet partially shaded gathering place for the foreshore. A path, again edged with benches, leads to a set of wide steps that fit the beaches contours. These steps serve as a sitting area as well as a communal towel and shoe spot. 10. Foreshore Parking The parking area on the foreshore has been replaced with low-key parallel car spaces along Geographe Bay Road. 11. The Foreshore Cafe The original toilet block has been replaced with a small cafe and kiosk. A public toilet will also be located here. The design of this cafe has yet to be finalized, although it is envisioned as small building that is nestled in the surrounding pepper trees.
